How do I go about a short-term hire?

1- The first step is to check that the item you want to hire is right for you. If you have never tried it before, please book onto one of our taster sessions where you can try out some options. The taster sessions are available to book via the website: https://experiencecommunity.co.uk/activities/taster-session/#book

2- Once you know which item you want to hire, contact us on 01484 841438 or at [email protected] to check availability and arrange dates.

3- We will send an invoice for the full amount which will need to be paid before the hire commences.

4- What we need from you (can be provided upon collection):
a) A form of photo ID such as passport or driving license
b) Proof of address such as utility bill or bank statement
c) Completed VAT exemption form if necessary.
d) The item will need to be securely stored in a building (ie not a vehicle or left outside) when not in use.

5- Collection and drop-off is usually arranged from our Slaithwaite office where the hire paperwork will be completed and signed.

The hire scheme is open to customers in the West Yorkshire and surrounding areas. People outside this area may still be able to hire from us, however please note our office is based in Slaithwaite, near Huddersfield (HD7 5AB). Any hires need to be collected and dropped off to us during office hours (Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm). We are not able to post or deliver.

No, our insurance does not cover international travel for short-term hires.

Anything from 1 day to 89 days is covered under our short-term hires.

The clip-on attachments are connected to wheelchairs by brackets which are specific to the wheelchair. The brackets are fairly costly, making this prohibitively expensive for short-term hires.

First of all, get in touch with us (01484 841438 or [email protected]). We will do what we can to repair or replace the item in a timely manner.

Please note that you would be liable for any damage or loss resulting from mis-use or inappropriate storage.

Long-Term hire calculator

How does the long-term hire process work?

We buy in new items for the long-term hires. Once you have selected the right product for your needs, we will issue an invoice for the deposit. The deposit is non-refundable, and is used to contribute towards our costs of purchasing the equipment. When this is paid, the item is ordered with the requested specification.

Once the item arrives you will need to arrange a time to visit us so we can set up the product to suit you and fit to your chair.

You will also need to set up a standing order for the required monthly amount for the duration of the hire.

At the end of the hire contract, you will have the option to either:
a) Return the item to us
b) Start a new long-term hire
c)Purchase the item at a second-hand price. The price is calculated based on the original SRP and the amount already paid via deposit and throughout the hire

Community feedback

I have had a spinal injury for 12 months and am still coming to terms with my disability. Experience Community has played a huge part in my recovery and rehabilitation.

Through a difficult year, their activities have given me a vital avenue to safely experience physical exercise and the outdoors while I relearn how to live my life.

Experience Community has been absolutely brilliant. The course came at just the right time for me. I really needed to be around people that could inspire and encourage and you certainly did that.

After contracting polio in 1958, I was unable to ride a bike as a child or teenager. In my 60s, I found EC and all that changed, with helpful, knowledgeable staff helping me choose the right cycle. I now regularly enjoy their escorted cycling sessions, gaining a new group of friends and a new activity that helps my overall well-being.

The Mountain Trike wheelchair has made a huge difference to my life. Being able to hire this equipment before buying, and going on the EC-organised rambles with support staff there to help when needed has been invaluable. It’s allowed me access to the countryside once more.

A really useful course that has pushed me a lot further. Recently a trip didn’t go at all to plan; two cancelled trains, more difficult wheeling than expected, and I had to use two buses and an alternative route through Leeds Station. But I found the confidence to just do it and surprised myself by just how much I’m now capable of!

I am very grateful to Experience Community for the opportunity to use and experience the equipment needed to access the outdoors. Without the service, care and support they offer, I doubt I would have ever reconnected with the outdoors

As a disabled person I have struggled to find a way to access outdoor activities independently and safely. I had all but given up when I came across Experience Community. I was shown a variety of equipment to find out what worked best for me. The guys were so helpful, patient and friendly and allayed any fears I might have had.

I have been attending all sorts of events with Experience Community for a few years now and have enjoyed every one. Their staff are helpful and encouraging and the range of equipment you can try is amazing. It’s allowed me to push myself in a safe, friendly environment, I’ve made new friends and it’s just great fun.

Experience Community are my guardian angels. Several times now they’ve saved me when nobody else in the country knew how to repair my wheelchair or my off-road trike, even the manufacturers! They’re a team of brilliant, smart and committed people who are driven to get people rolling and I owe them a massive thanks.

Experience Community is an organisation that has shown me I can still be free to enjoy the ‘great outdoors’ even as I lose the ability to walk – meeting new people, making new friends and visiting different places.

My advice, whoever you are — is to take a deep breath and come along to see for yourself!

“I have been involved with Experience Community for ten years — they’re my first point of contact whenever I want to try something new as a disabled person who is also a full-time wheelchair user.

This includes wheelchair skills, disabled outdoor leader training and independent travelling experience and advice.”
